For decades, we’ve known that Pamela Voorhees was the original killer in Friday the 13th, and that the accidental death of her young son at the hands of neglectful, sex-starved counselors pushed her over the edge. What we didn’t know were the details of the events that led Pamela to transform from a good-natured mom to a cold-blooded, knife-wielding murderer. Thankfully, Crystal Lake fills in the blanks.
This new series stars Linda Cardellini as Pamela and introduces us to an adorable, lovable, and innocent little Jason Voorhees. There’s so much to love about this series, from the callbacks to the original Friday the 13th films to the new lore of Pamela and Jason’s background.
Quick Episodes on a Sped-up Timeline

Crystal Lake speeds up the original Friday the 13th timeline, which would have had Jason’s drowning occurring in the late 1950s, and moved it to the 1970s. Devoted mom Pamela Voorhees is working as a cook at Camp Crystal Lake and living a quiet life in the woods with her 11-year-old son, Jason, who suffers from hydrocephalus, making him an easy target for young bullies.
The eight episodes of this suspenseful series fly by in a flash, steeping you in lore you didn’t know you needed. The show gives Jason’s background an almost sci-fi plot twist, which I absolutely love. It fills in a lot of gaps in the original story and timeline; plus the scenery, vibes, costumes, and music are immaculate.
Linda Cardellini Makes Pamela Voorhees a REAL Mother

Linda Cardellini plays Pamela as a desperate mother, a mother who has suffered and lost so much that nobody else seems to understand. She becomes obsessed with finding her son’s body after he supposedly drowns (though no remains are ever recovered). She ostracizes herself from her close-knit community, and goes on the warpath to take down anyone who had anything to do with her son’s tragic demise, with bloody results.
The idea of Pamela as more of a sympathetic character and less of a crazy killer is the best part of Crystal Lake. I love getting to know what this woman had been through, what her thoughts were, what was making her tick. It makes her so much more relatable, especially as a parent. What wouldn’t you do for your only child, to avenge a cruel death, to recover their body, to make a terrible situation as right as you possibly could for them…?

I had high expectations going into this series (especially as it was released a week after Mike Flanagan’s amazing Carrie series), and I’m so stoked that Crystal Lake not only met my expectations but exceeded them. The stellar cast, the opening credits (so nostalgic!), the retro music, and a gripping, intense, engaging storyline gave way to fear as Pamela’s descent into psychosis escalates in the last half of the series and bodies begin dropping all over the lakeside small town.
The Changes Enhance the Lore While Respecting Longtime Fans

Crystal Lake was shot at Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco in Blairstown, New Jersey, the same location where the original 1980 film was shot, giving the series an air of authenticity. Incredible gore and special effects, a pitch-perfect 1970’s vibe, and a great fit into the mythology of the original series makes Crystal Lake a standout horror series and a welcome addition to the lengthy Friday the 13th canon.
Linda Cardellini nailed the part of Pamela Voorhees, and Callum Vinson was such a sweet, effective young Jason Voorhees that it’s easy to see why Pamela was so hell-bent on revenge after he supposedly drowned in the lake. I’d do absolutely anything for this precious boy!!

The ending of the series doesn’t really coincide with the first film, so it’s not a by-the-numbers prequel but rather a background for the films, altering the timeline of the original to make it work for the show. However, it’s not a distraction at all but rather gives even more depth to the characters and storyline. Even if you’re a Friday the 13th purist, this series should absolutely get a pass!
This isn’t the first time that the original timeline of a series has been changed – remember when the new It films came out and director Andy Muschietti decided to set the Losers’ Club in the 1980s instead of the 1960s like the 1990 miniseries (and Stephen King’s original novel)? It worked out well, putting the adult characters in present-day 2016 (when Chapter One was released).
I Want MORE Crystal Lake!

The main question on MY mind is: Will there be a season 2 of Crystal Lake, exploring Jason Voorhees’ transformation into the terrifying killer from the films, and Pamela’s imminent demise at the hands of a Camp Crystal Lake counselor? As of this writing, there hasn’t been a Season 2 of the show announced.
Personally, I’d love to see more of Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees and enjoy the nostalgia of another summer at Crystal Lake!
What do you think? Did you enjoy the show? Are you desperate for a season two? Let me know in the comments.
