Lauren Spear’s Pick

I chose Hausu AKA House because, in addition to other things, June is National Adopt a Cat Month and this surreal horror-comedy teaches you the important cat owner lesson that “Any old cat can open a door but only a witch cat can close a door!” That’s something you’ll need to keep in mind when searching for your new best friend/pet/familiar. Also, June is the absolute PEAK of watermelon season, and Hausu has a very memorable watermelon scene (complete with a disembodied head trying to bite someone’s butt!). It also involves a group of school girl’s heading off to the countryside for summer vacation, and schools used to let out for summer vacation in June. There’s a lot of “June” vibes connected with Hausu! Also, it’s just plain fun. It’s super silly and weird and it’s a PERFECT horror film to show your friends who haven’t seen it yet. It’s a good watch if you’re on your own, but it’s an AMAZING watch if you’re with a group! Not Rated | Runtime 1h 28m

Frank Spear’s Pick

Frank Spear says: “I love ALL of the Friday the 13th movies, but I picked Jason Takes Manhattan for June because it’s the one that’s the most silly fun. I was very excited that they announced Jason Voorhees as the new Killer in Dead by Daylight (I’ve been playing since 2016) and I wanted to pick a Friday the 13th film to celebrate. Part 8 is a lot of fun! Turn your brain off and enjoy.” Rated R | Runtime 1h 40m
Where to Watch Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989):
Christi Bandy’s Pick

Christi Bandy says: “I thought Whistle was really fun! It’s kinda Final Destination-ish but has great acting, a fun storyline, and a banging soundtrack. Also some well-placed and interesting Wes craven nods which I loved. It has one of the actors from Yellowjackets… It’s not gonna change the world, but Whistle‘s a light, entertaining movie that’s great to unwind with. Really fun!” Rated R | Runtime 1h 40m
Where to Watch Whistle (2026):
Isaiah Swanson’s Pick

Isaiah Swanson says: “My streaming pick is Be My Valentine (2026) directed by Stefanie Davis.
Gina is a hopeless romantic who documents her journey falling in love with Zach. She knows he’s the one! She even leaves him a bunch of dead frogs on his doorstep to prove it . . . but does Zach even know who she is? Be My Valentine is a delightful found footage gem with an unhinged lead performance from Samantha Dalesio!” Unrated | Runtime 1h
Where to Watch Be My Valentine (2026):
AJ Spencer’s Pick

AJ Spencer says: “I’ll go with a classic example of B Movie fun: Ghoulies II!” Rated PG-13 | Runtime 1h 29m
Where to Watch Ghoulies II (1987):
Robert Tharp’s Pick

Robert Tharp says: “Deep Blue Sea is a ‘turn your brain off’ horror movie… Which is ironic since the plot involves scientists trying to find a way to cure Alzheimer’s by doing science stuff to sharks. But they just end up with super smart, angry sharks! I love it. It’s a lot of fun. Very summery! There’s a mix of real sharks, really great animatronic sharks, and a tiny bit of CGI. It does a great job making you NOT want to go into the water… Oh, and I absolutely LOVE Samuel J. Jackson’s inspirational speech moment. I’ll never forget the first time I saw it, and it’s still a highlight on rewatches. Classic!” Rated R | Runtime 1h 45m

Cathy Tharp’s Pick
Note: Lauren’s mom doesn’t write articles for HorrorFam.com, but she’s an important cheerleader behind-the-scenes and wanted to contribute to this page!

Mom chose The 13th Warrior and says, “Okay. I know some people will say The 13th Warrior doesn’t ‘count’ as a horror movie, but I say it DOES! It’s like a… A fictionalized historical fantasy folklore horror film. Yeah! It has a dozen Vikings and one Arab man going on a journey to fight off something REALLY scary. Ooh! I love how Ibn learns the Viking’s language while journeying with them. That’s how you do it! When you’re surrounded by people who don’t speak your language, you eventually learn theirs. The way they depict the language coming into focus for him is how it feels in real life. That’s how I learned Spanish! Back in the ’70s when I was at work and my co-workers didn’t speak English and I felt so lost until it just started to click…
Anyway! The 13th Warrior is a really good HORROR film that’s perfect for summer. The Wendols are super scary. The first time I watched, I had nightmares about the Wendols for weeks. And I’ve seen it many times since and they’re still scary. They’re actually… Ooh. But that’s a spoiler, isn’t it? Hmm. Just watch it! What they are is actually WORSE than what they think! So creepy!!” Rated R | Runtime 1h 42m
Where to Watch The 13th Warrior (1999):
Adam Page’s Pick

Adam Page says: “Tod Browning’s Freaks is honestly one of the most unsettling movies ever made, and it’s not because of monster make-up or jump-scares… The cast were real circus performers with physical differences, and it gives the movie a raw, unfiltered authenticity you just can’t fake. They flirt and laugh and scheme and feel betrayed like anyone would. The finale hits and you’re in full nightmare territory. The famous ‘one of us’ chant sets up home in your brainstem and won’t leave. Pre-Code Hollywood really delivered something genuinely haunting, and the last shot still physically puts my back up and clenches my stomach.” Not Rated | Runtime 1h 4m
