16 Best Improvised Weapons in Horror Movies

16 Memorable Improvised Weapons in Horror Movies

Before I share 16 of the most memorable (to me, at least!) improvised weapons in horror movies, I wanted to quickly outline what I consider an “improvised weapon” to be, so we’re on the same page:

First, it’s something that wouldn’t normally be used as a weapon. So, while noticing an available gun left on a tabletop behind your attacker may lead to some improvisational thinking/actions on your part as a Survivor in a horror movie-type situation, the gun itself isn’t an improvised weapon. Because it’s being used for its intended purpose.

Now, if you had to build a rocking chair and you grabbed ahold of a gun and used it as a hammer for the nails, I could say you — badly and ill-advisedly — improvised a carpentry tool (Side note: Please don’t ever do that). And, in the reverse, if you spontaneously used a hammer as a weapon, that would be an improvised weapon. Because that’s not what hammers are intended for!

Misery Annie Wilkes sledgehammer iconic horror movie weapon

With me so far? Awesome.

The second rule I’ve implemented for what “counts” as “improvised weapons in horror movies” is this: It has to be an object the character in question thought to use as a weapon after they were thrust into whatever situation they’re in. It’s not something weird they brought to a situation ahead of time, fully intending to use it as a weapon from the get-go.

For example, Leatherface isn’t using a chainsaw for its intended purpose, but it’s how he always intended to use it. He isn’t improvising! And neither was Annie Wilkes in Misery with her sledgehammer; she was in full control of the situation and planned her actions! That’s right – I’m using both definitions of the word “improvised” for each entry on this list. (Otherwise it would be several hundred pages long and you and I would both be cranky by the end of it!).

All of the wacky weapons I’ve selected were utilized by the characters in question as spur-of-the-moment decisions… even if said characters end up holding onto their chosen weapon for a while (or a very long while) afterwards.

Now that we’re all on the same page, here are 16 memorable improvised weapons in horror movies, used by good guys and baddies, in no particular order:

1. Lawnmower in Dead Alive AKA Brain Dead (1992)

Dead Alive lawnmower scene

The lawnmower in Peter Jackson’s Dead Alive was the FIRST memorable improvised weapon from a horror movie that popped into my head. If you’ve seen Dead Alive, you know exactly what a standout scene the “mowing” zombies down with a power lawnmower is! Yes, even more than the infamous custard scene.

Zombie films are saturated with improvised weapons. To the point that, they’re so expected in zombie horror, it takes EXTRA effort to make one REALLY stand out — and Dead Alive succeeds and then some with the lawnmower scene.

2. Candy Cane Decoration in Anna and the Apocalypse (2017)

Anna and the Apocalypse candy cane weapon

Not only is Anna and the Apocalypse one of the best horror movie musicals, it’s one of the best Christmas horror movies! So much of the film’s visual style is directly linked to the holiday sweaters, pageantry, music, lights, and decorations. Its present in every scene.

So, while a lot of characters in Anna and the Apocalypse improvise weapons from baseball bats to wrenches (again, zombie movies are great for that!), the most memorable improvised weapon is the candy cane lawn decoration Anna ends up wielding.

And, boy, did the marketing team know it! Anna is holding her candy cane in nearly every poster and promotional photo available. And who can blame them? It’s visually perfect. It’s so fun!

3. Umbrella in Scream (1996)

Scream hiding in the closet umbrella scene

Towards the end of Scream (1996), Sidney Prescott is having a breakdown in a hall closet (shown above), having just learned the identity of Ghostface! When we next catch up with her, she’s emerging from said closet, wielding an umbrella as a weapon — thrusting it into the chest of the killer, firmly cementing herself as a kickbutt Final Girl!

Part of the fun of the Scream franchise is figuring out who Ghostface is in each film, and that includes the first one. So, I’m not showing the actual (bright green!) umbrella doing the stabby-stab on the baddie-bad. However, I will share this: There was a mishap during that scene and the actor playing Ghostface actually did get injured by the umbrella! Ouch!!

4. Ballpoint Pen in Red Eye (2005)

Frankenstein ballpoint pen scene in Red Eye

This Frankenstein-topped ballpoint pen is so cute that you can’t help but notice it. A teenager on the title flight is using it to doodle with. It reminded me so much of one of my favorite pens from childhood!

When my parents and I saw Wes Craven’s Red Eye in theaters in 2005, there were audible gasps and a few cheers at what happened when this adorable pen became a much-needed weapon for the heroine.

5. Frying Pan in Friday the 13th (1980)

Friday the 13th Alice improvised weapons in horror movies

I’m attaching a photo of Friday the 13th‘s Alice using a serving fork and a baseball bat because the scene with her using the frying pan reveals a pretty big spoiler regarding the killer. But, as you can see, Alice is pretty good overall about grabbing whatever’s on hand to defend herself with!

I was just really charmed by the frying pan because I’ve always loved cartoons and whacking someone with a frying pan is such a classic ‘toon move!

6. Microwave in Gremlins (1984)

Not what a microwave is for. But very effective.

7. Jackhammer Stake & Holy Water Squirt Gun in From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)

From Dusk Till Down holy water squirt gun

Minimal spoilers, but… From Dusk Till Dawn starts out as an action crime drama and then it’s revealed about halfway through that it’s actually a vampire movie. I know that’s something that’s revealed in the trailer, but I didn’t see the trailer before I watched it when I was young and I was SO surprised and delighted by that genre switch-up! I kinda didn’t want to share that info here in case anyone else wanted to go into it cold, but all the streaming services’ and DVD blurbs say it so that’s kind of an impossibility for new viewers at this point.

Mentioning holy water & stake-based weaponry probably gave away the “twist” as well.

I’ve shown the squirt gun filled with holy water above, but you can see the jackhammer stake in action in the trailer.

8. Chainsaw Hand in Evil Dead II (1987)

Evil Dead II when Ash got his chainsaw hand

In Evil Dead II, Ash Williams chops off his demon possessed hand and replaces it with a chainsaw — an improvised weapon that became one of his defining character traits for over 35 years, spanning multiple films, video games, comic books, and a television show. This is the weapon I hinted at when I said one of the spur-of-the-moment weapons sticks with the character long after they first obtain it!

Many of the improvised weapons in horror movies that I’ve listed are things you and I could grab and use if we were put in a dangerous situation. This one? Not so much. Most of us couldn’t impulsively attach a chainsaw to our wrist stump, let alone use it to massive success. But most of us aren’t Ash Williams.

Hail to the King, Baby!

9. Corncob in Sleepwalkers (1992)

corncob stab in sleepwalkers

Mary, the evil werecat mom in Sleepwalkers, didn’t just happen to have a corncob with her. She overhears a police officer making a call to tattle on her murderous misdeeds, she notices the trash leftover from the homeowner’s dinner, she grabs a corncob, and she stabs him with it. Fatally.

Even if you never watch the rest of the movie, please watch the corncob scene from Sleepwalkers someday. It’s wonderfully, presumably unintentionally (since nothing else in the film is particularly played for laughs), hilaaaaaaaaaarious.

Where to watch Sleepwalkers:

10. Cheese Grater in Evil Dead Rise (2023)

Evil Dead Rise cheese grater poster

Again, we have an improvised weapon that stood out SO much (and the marketing team was fully aware of how much impact it would have on audiences) that it’s on the poster. The cheese grater scene in Evil Dead Rise is one of those scenes that makes you go “gyaaaahhhhh” even though you’re an adult and fully aware it’s just special FX.

11. The Brick in Speak No Evil (2024)

improvised weapons in Speak No Evil 2024

My husband and I saw Speak No Evil (2024) in theaters. This post was on the forefront of my mind at the time and I couldn’t help but notice all the improvised weapons being used! There were two in particular that stood out to me, but I’ll only mention the BRICK. This movie’s only two years old, for gosh sake! If I’m not spoiling movies from decades ago, I’m certainly not spoiling a movie that’s only a toddler. Yeesh!

It’s a well-done, very tense film! James McAvoy is on my ever-growing list of actors who were absolutely phenomenal in horror roles who got snubbed at the Oscars for his part in Speak No Evil! He plays an unsettling creep masterfully.

Where to watch Speak No Evil:

12. The Deer Head in Get Out (2017)

Get Out deer head scene

I finally got around to watching Get Out last year and it’s every bit as great as you’ve been told. No notes. If you didn’t get a chance to see it when it was new and have been forgetting it exists whenever you sit down to watch something via streaming (the endless streaming options are overwhelming!), then this is your sign to FINALLY give it a watch. I’m hereby relieving you of the “analysis paralysis” that comes from scrolling through streaming services’ menu options: Go watch Get Out. It’s great.

Anyway, getting back to the actual topic, there’s a taxidermied deer head on a wall in the home the characters are staying in. You see it and, as a horror film fan, you know those horns are going to be used by someone at some point. It’s just a question of when, by whom, and to what extent.

When the moment comes and the deer head is finally put into action, you’ll cheer! Horned taxidermy animals have been used plenty of times in horror movies and television shows, but the way it was implemented in Get Out was one of the most satisfying.

13. Jade’s Head in Mr. Vampire (1985)

Mr Vampire 1985 martial arts horror movie weapons

I’ve already gushed about Mr. Vampire a couple of times! I first watched it when I was writing about horror movies from 1985 and then I gabbed about it again when I was sharing my thoughts on some of the most awesome PG-13 horror movies. It’s an absolute blast! I really hope Criterion comes out with a Bluray edition of Mr. Vampire someday so I can own it.

As a martial arts horror comedy, there are a TON of improvised weapons being used throughout Mr. Vampire‘s runtime (and they’re all pretty fun/clever!); however, one that I “joked” about including on this list was Jade’s head.

Jade is a “spirit”/”ghoul” (subtitle translations vary) who can throw HER OWN HEAD as a weapon! She uses plenty of other spur-of-the-moment weapons in her big fight scene, including choking a man with her ponytail/braid, but when she finally resorts to launching her head from her shoulders… Oh, man. I absolutely loved it. Hahaha! The other improvised weapons in Mr. Vampire are more plausible, but Jade using her own head to fight with is the most memorable/fun.

Where to watch Mr. Vampire:

14. The Phone in The Black Phone (2021)

The Black Phone Finn fights with phone

Finn is captured by The Grabber and held prisoner in his secret basement. He utilizes several objects as impromptu weapons (including using his rocket-shaped pen/flashlight to defend himself during the initial “grab”/abduction!), but it’s an extra special horror movie moment when he ends up putting the titular phone to good use!

The Black Phone is an excellent horror movie that my entire family loves. If you haven’t seen it yet, all four of us highly recommend it. It also has one of the sweetest horror movie BFF duos I’ve seen in recent years.

15. The Model Piece in No One Will Save You (2023)

No One Will Save You Brynn kills aliens with improvised horror movie weapons

No One Will Save You is a unique horror film in the alien subgenre. It has near-zero dialogue… but quite a few improvised weapons!

Brynn, the non-speaking protagonist, has her home invaded by grey aliens and she uses a number of household items to defend herself with. She grabs sewing scissors, a curling iron, a box cutter, and a few other everyday objects. However, the one that was most memorable to me was the miniature bell tower.

Maybe I should back up so you have some context! Okay. So. Brynn is very much an arts and crafts kinda gal. She sews her own clothes and makes decorative bird houses and whatnot. She’s also built a model town, similar to Adam and Barbara in Beetlejuice, and it’s a model piece from that project that she uses as an extremely effective method of self-defense!

If you have a lot of in-the-works art projects, miniatures, or other somewhat pointy knick-knacks in your home then you can watch No One Will Save You and rest easy. You have some protection on hand if aliens decide to bust through your door someday. Feel free to refer your spouse/family/friends to this post if you need some back-up the next time you’re trying to justify your hobby!

16. The Sock in Over Your Dead Body (2026) – NO SPOILERS!!!

Over Your Dead Body 2026 billiard ball sock scene

Our local theater does lil events where they offer budget tickets to watch a soon-to-be-released film but, the catch is, you don’t get to know what you’re watching until it starts playing (the Monday Mystery Movie). One of the movies my husband and I watched recently was Over Your Dead Body – which is out in theaters TODAY!

Over Your Dead Body is a crime horror comedy about a married couple who go on vacation, each with the intent of killing the other. Don’t worry – all of that is in the trailer and not at all a spoiler.

Frank absolutely LOVED Over Your Dead Body! And we both got a kick out of all the improvised weapons that were used. Like Dead Alive, a lawnmower is put to effective use. However, Frank and I both agree that the sock is the best spur-of-the-moment weapon in the film.

Since Over Your Dead Body just officially hit theaters today, you probably won’t see streaming options below for a while. But, if you come back to this post again later this year, it should update to let you know where you can watch it. Or, hit the theaters this weekend and check it out! It’s very violent (Frank compared the camerawork to Crank and some of the fights to Nobody) and starts off a bit like you’re watching a silly version of a “true crime” story (from the perspective of the murderous spouses) and then takes an interesting horror turn. NO SPOILERS!!!

  1. This grammatically sound explanation amused me and made me aware of how dangerous everyday things can be (I have a cheese grater just like the one in the photo). Regarding improvising weapons, I immediately think of Peter Cushing as Van Helsing transforming a pair of candlesticks into a crucifix to force Dracula to expose himself to disintegration by the sun in Horror of Dracula. Great article!

    1. Haha I’m so glad you liked it!! A lifetime of people misunderstanding me has given me the tendency to OVER explain nearly EVERYthing… But at least it was amusing this time! 😀 And I absolutely LOVE your horror movie “improvised weapon” choice!! That’s so good, I’m mad at myself for not thinking of it. It fits though – he didn’t walk in with candlesticks, candlesticks aren’t meant to be used for vampire battle, and Van Helsing used quick thinking and effectively used them as a weapon. WELL DONE! (Also, provided it’s still streaming next month, Dad was planning to pick Horror of Dracula as his horror streaming Pick of the Month for May in honor of World Dracula Day)

      1. To be perfectly honest, the idea came from Peter Cushing himself. He asked director Terence Fisher, “Where does Van Helsing get so many crucifixes?” Receiving no answer, he suggested improvising two candlesticks as a crucifix, creating that classic scene. Mr. Tharp has a refined taste for vampires.
