Lauren Spear’s Pick

I usually stick to recommending horror movies on here, but when I saw that it was Twilight Zone Day on May 11th, I couldn’t resist recommending the classic show. It’s AWESOME, even now! Certain episodes are even more haunting now than they were back then. If you’ve never seen the original show, or if it’s been a while since you’ve re-watched it, be sure to check it out this month. My favorite episode of all time is “Nick of Time” (season 2; episode 7). It stars William Shatner as a man who overanalyzes every action in his life to the point of complete inaction and it only gets worse when he stumbles into a devilish fortune-telling machine. I relate to that episode and the unusually hopeful ending makes me smile. I also find “The Midnight Sun” (season 3; episode 10) genuinely disturbing and, although it’s not the best episode, I have an immense fondness for “Five Characters in Search of an Exit” (season 3; episode 14). I love them ALL to varying degrees, but those are my Top Three! You can learn a lot about someone by asking them what their favorite Twilight Zone episode is… So, I asked everyone on the HorrorFam.com team! Here’s what they chose:
- Frank Spear’s favorite Twilight Zone episode is “The Lonely” (season 1; episode 7). Frank said: “I don’t really have a ‘deep’ reason for liking this one. At least, I don’t think I do. I could compare it to all the horrors of robots/AI stuff that’s going on right now, but it wouldn’t be genuine because I liked this episode BEFORE all that stuff started happening… Though it certainly feels even MORE prevalent now.”
- Christi Bandy’s favorite Twilight Zone episode is “The After Hours” (season 1; episode 34). Christi said: “That’s EASY! ‘The After Hours’ has always been my favorite Twilight Zone. As a kid I was scared of store mannequins so that one scared me SO much.”
- Isaiah Swanson’s favorite Twilight Zone episode is “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet” (season 5; episode 3). Isaiah said: “As far as Twilight Zone, I’ll rep ‘Nightmare at 20,000 Feet’ since it’s one of my earliest childhood memories that traumatized me lol. That was the reason I was terrified to fly for years!”
- AJ Spencer’s favorite Twilight Zone episode is “Living Doll” (season 5; episode 6). AJ said: “The Twilight Zone episode that will always haunt me is the one with the possessed doll – Talky Tina! I have a fear of intimate objects coming to life thanks to movies like Child’s Play and Dolls!”
- Adam Page’s favorite Twilight Zone episode is “The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street” (season 1; episode 22). Adam said: “I haven’t seen that many of them. Criminal, I know. The Twilight Zone is so hard to get over here [in Ireland]. But the ones that stuck with me are ‘It’s a Good Life’ as children in horror are always scary and ‘To Serve Man’… But the one that absolutely freaked me out (and still does!) is ‘The Monsters are due on Maple Street.’ I’ll go with that one! For me, what makes it truly scary is how fast it happens. Take away our streetlight and our Wi-Fi and we’re all about 30 seconds away from Mob Rule!”
- Robert Tharp’s favorite Twilight Zone episode is “Little Girl Lost” (season 3; episode 26). Robert/Dad said: “I like pretty much all of them, but ‘Little Girl Lost’ is the one that’s stuck with me the most. I’ve always preferred to sleep next to a wall when it’s an option because I have a tendency to tumble out of bed… But then ‘Little Girl Lost’ taught me that that’s not safe either because I might roll over and go through the wall into another dimension! Sleeping is very stressful. I wish I wasn’t so good at it.”
- Cathy Tharp’s favorite Twilight Zone episode is “The Fever” (season 1; episode 17). Cathy/Mom said: “I love ALL of The Twilight Zone! I even like the movie from the ’80s! I can’t just pick ONE episode. What did everyone else pick? … Those are the ones I would’ve chosen too! But I can’t say one that someone ELSE picked!! Hmm. I guess I’ll choose the one with the slot machine that chases the guy around saying ‘Franklin! Franklin!’ I LOVE that one and no one else picked it. People need to see that one! But be sure to tell the readers that I love ALL of them, please.”
What’s YOUR favorite Twilight Zone episode? I’m on social media as @LoveHorrorFam on pretty much every platform imaginable, so send me a message! Also, The Twilight Zone is perfect for younger (let’s say 8 and up?) audiences. They used to show Twilight Zone episodes at my elementary school sometimes on rainy days and (most of) the kids LOVED it! And, if you’re overwhelmed by where to dive in, the faves listed above are a FANTASTIC selection to start with. Rated TV-PG | Runtime 28m per episode

Christi Bandy says: “My pick is a Netflix’s Something Very Bad Is About to Happen. It’s SO good! Super bloody and fun.” Rated TV-MA | Runtime 22m x 8 episodes
Where to Watch Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen (2026):
Isaiah Swanson’s Pick

Isaiah Swanson says: “My streaming pick is Vieja Loca (Crazy Old Lady) directed by MartÃn Mauregui.
When Pedro begrudgingly checks in on his ex-girlfriend’s elderly motherly Alicia, he quickly realizes she’s slipped into senility as she mistakes him for her own ex from decades ago. This confusion escalates dramatically when Alicia ties Pedro to a chair and guides him through a torturous night of hell that would impress Annie Wilkes herself! Yes, it would pair nicely with Misery, but perhaps Revenge! (1971) starring Shelley Winters would be more apt, as they both involve men being held captive because of mistaken identities! Vieja Loca is darkly funny and very twisted with memorable performances from the entire cast and quite a great ending. Highly recommend, especially if you enjoy movies unafraid to really go there!” Unrated | Runtime 1h 34m
Where to Watch Vieja Loca AKA Crazy Old Lady (2025):
AJ Spencer’s Pick

AJ Spencer says: “My May pick is Dolly, streaming on Shudder. I enjoyed the throwback to backwoods exploitation horror of old. Trigger warning for extreme violence.” Rated R | Runtime 1h 23m
Where to Watch Dolly (2025):
Robert Tharp’s Pick

Robert Tharp says: “I remembered that World Dracula Day is in May since I wrote about it last year and so I’m going with Horror of Dracula! Christopher Lee is my favorite Dracula and Horror of Dracula is where he cut his chops (or should I say chomps?) in the lead role. He’s equally matched by Peter Cushing as Van Helsing! They’re both excellent. And they’re both May birthday boys. Watch Horror of Dracula to celebrate!” Not Rated | Runtime 1h 22m
Where to Watch Horror of Dracula (1958):
Cathy Tharp’s Pick
Note: Lauren’s mom doesn’t write articles for HorrorFam.com, but she’s an important cheerleader behind-the-scenes and wanted to contribute to this page!

Mom chose Little Shop of Horrors (1986) because “Last month I said, ‘April Showers bring May Flowers’ and… Here they are! Little Shop of Horrors takes place in a flower shop! And Audrey II is basically a very big flower bud and is so cute and has so many teeth. I like the characters and the music and it’s not TOO scary even though it’s about a plant that eats people. I like this one better than the original from the 1960s. Watch this version!” Rated PG-13 | Runtime 1h 34m
Where to Watch Little Shop of Horrors (1986):
Adam Page’s Pick

Adam Page says: “I think Se7en is frightening in a really insidious way, as it doesn’t need jump scares. David Fincher turns that rain-soaked city into something that’s rotting and each crime scene feels like walking into a nightmare. Then there’s sins-focused serial killer John Doe, articulate and calm, and right about things in the most unsettling way. He isn’t a raving lunatic, and that’s the problem. ‘What’s in the box?’ You already know. That’s the worst (best?) part.” Rated R | Runtime 2h 7m
