Lauren Spear’s Pick

Where to stream Escape Room 2019

I stumbled upon Escape Room when I was looking for great PG-13 horror movies from this century (you may have noticed I tend to recommend a lot of horror films from the 20th century) and I loved it! It seems like not many folks have seen it, and I’d like to change that. Give it a chance! I found it oddly comforting in a “this is sort of a Saw or Cube type movie but without the gore” kinda way. It’s about six strangers who go to an escape room (hence the title) for a fun day out, but they’re trapped in the experience and they’ll die if they don’t work together to solve all the clues to get out. I thought it was really neat that the emphasis was on puzzle-solving abilities and remaining cool under pressure rather than physical fighting prowess.

I think Escape Room would be a fun horror movie for tweens and teens as well as adult fans looking for a horror film that has some of the “flavor” of harder fare but want to walk away with a grin instead of a “Whew. Boy. That was a lot.” It has a nice balance of palm sweat-inducing “ahhhh” moments and things that are too silly to take seriously. My favorite scene involves what the characters deemed “A Deadly Version of Musical Chairs.” (I had Petula Clark’s “Downtown” stuck in my head for weeks!). Escape Room brings up some fun points about “What does it really take/mean to be a survivor?” without getting too deep about it. Rated PG-13 | Runtime 1h 39m

Frank Spear’s Pick

Frank Spear says: “I’m pretty sure Him went under most people’s radar when it came out in September of last year. Since it’s now streaming and I liked it a lot, I wanted to recommend it to you all so you can check it out.

Him follows Cameron Cade (Tyriq Withers) on his journey to become the next big football player (‘Him’), like his idol Isaiah White (Marlon Wayans). After a series of… strange events, Cade is invited by White himself to train him to become his successor. Sounds like a dream, right? Except it slowly devolves into more of a nightmare as Cade is put through increasingly disturbing ‘challenges’ and eventually realizes that there’s more to this situation than meets the eye.

I’m a big fan of sports movies, so having it combined with a horror movie like this is a real treat. Both Withers and Wayans do a fantastic job. Plus, it’s always fun to see Wayans in serious roles. Him runs at a fairly tight 96 minutes, and the conclusion to this movie was both surprising and awesome. Check it out!” Rated R | Runtime 1h 36m

In Search of Darkness 1995-1999

Christi Bandy says: “I love these documentaries because they talk about cool popular movies and also highlight films you may not know. And I love hearing from directors and actors and finding out behind the scenes stuff!!!! So much fun!!!” Not Rated | Runtime 6h 23m

Isaiah Swanson’s Pick

Where Hag 2025 is streaming now

Isaiah Swanson says: “Rowan is a barista and musician hoping to get his big break, when suddenly his long-lost childhood friend Mag reappears in his life. They become roommates and Mag has a plan to help him achieve his dreams. But she is hiding a dark obsession, one that threatens more than Rowan’s musical ambitions! HAG is wonderfully fun hagsploitation film for our contemporary moment. You’ll love to cringe at Jane de Wet, who plays the insufferable Mag!” Rated TV-MA | Runtime 1h 40m

Where to Watch Hag (2025):

AJ Spencer’s Pick

1000 Women in Horror documentary streaming

AJ Spencer says: “I wanna do something a little different to celebrate women in horror for this pick because I feel like that’s important, so I’m going with the 1,000 Women In Horror documentary that just came to Shudder!” Not Rated | Runtime 1h 36m

Robert Tharp’s Pick

streaming kpop demon hunters oscar win

Robert Tharp says: “Sinners was my favorite vampire musical of 2025, and K-Pop Demon Hunters was my favorite animated demon musical of the past year. I thought the characters were great! The main trio are each distinct and utterly charmed me. I also loved the variety of scary monsters/demons. They’re spooky enough for this to count as ‘horror’ without being TOO scary for most kids. And ‘Derpy’ the purple tiger absolutely steals the show whenever he turns up. I love Derpy!” Rated PG | Runtime 1h 47m

Mom chose Matango (1963) because “Well, after Jesus and Easter, April makes me think of Spring flowers and Spring rain… and that makes me think about mushrooms! Mmm. I love mushrooms. I think everyone should watch Matango and have some sort of a mushroom snack with it. OOH! If you want to be a really FUN GUY *tee hee hee* you could order a mushroom pizza! I think that would be the perfect weekend: Matango and a mushroom pizza.” Unrated | Runtime 1h 29m

Where to Watch Matango AKA Attack of the Mushroom People (1963):

Adam Page’s Pick

where to stream Slugs 1988 Muerte Viscosa

Adam Page says: “Slugs is an absolute masterclass of glorious nonsense, and that’s exactly why it’s so great. The premise is perfectly absurd: mutated toxic-waste slugs terrorize a small town while confused authorities won’t believe the local health inspector. Not a single person in this movie acts like a real human being, the dialogue is so wooden you could build a canoe out of it, and the gore effects are both impressive and repulsive. There’s even a scene set in a restaurant you have to see to believe. But it’s the sort of movie that really tries, and I think that makes all the difference. It’s a total uncut, slimy joy from beginning to end.” Rated R | Runtime 1h 29m
