Lauren Spear’s Pick

Whenever I think of February, the first thing that comes to my mind is the opening sentence from Clive Barker’s book The Thief of Always: “The great gray beast February had eaten Harvey Swick alive.” Then, I remember that February is also the month that hosts Valentine’s Day and I should probably try to be more romantic… Which is why I’m choosing Near Dark as my horror movie recommendation! It’s an absolutely fantastic vampire film (the bar scene has been imitated in other films, though never quite as well) with a seriously stacked cast of amazing horror actors (Lance Henriksen, Jenette Goldstein, Bill Paxton, Joshua John Miller, Troy Evans, Tim Thomerson, etc.). It’s primary focus is on the characters, and they feel real. There’s a romance at the heart of it, and a more optimistic ending than you might expect. Near Dark makes you feel like you’re in the movie’s world with them, living the (night) life of a vampire. It has moments of humor (but they’re more realistic than slapstick – like how your friends are sometimes funny, but not necessarily standup comedians), some standout practical effects pertaining to vampire violence (again, the bar scene is often shocking for first-time viewers), it’s very romantic (with zero nudity/sex), and it gets pretty scary at times (it starts with dread and ends with action and both types of horror hit home for me since it’s so well done!). Also, I was really amused by the re-release poster/DVD art that they did for Near Dark during the Twilight era. It’s very funny, but a bit misleading. That said, Near Dark has been a favorite of mine since I was 13 and I wouldn’t hesitate to share it with teens, provided they know the vampires are the scary/violent variety and not, um, “vegetarian” high school vamps. Rated R | Runtime 1h 34m

Frank Spear’s Pick

Frank Spear says: “I watched The Exorcism of Emily Rose for the first time last year when I was writing about 2005 horror movies and it was one of my favorites from that year. I keep thinking about it, months later, and I really want some other people to watch it, too! I’ve never seen anything quite like it. It’s an exorcism horror story, told from differing points of view, through a courtroom case. There’s plenty of creepy demon stuff, but there’s also a really intriguing homicide investigation and trial. I loved the back-and-forth between ‘she was actually possessed and this needed to be done’ and ‘no, that priest murdered an innocent girl.’ It feels like a true crime documentary but goes heavy into supernatural-type horror stuff as well. I loved it. Plus, it’s PG-13 so it’s not TOO hardcore for most people! You can show it to your teens or tweens, if you have any. It’s not super gory. I’m going to share this one with my family soon. I really need someone else to watch this one so I can finally talk about it freely without worrying about spoilers!” Rated PG-13 | Runtime 1h 59m
Where to Watch The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005):
Christi Bandy’s Pick

Christi Bandy says: “I LOVED Mother of Flies! I love all the Adams family’s films and this one is SO good… great effects and a powerful storyline! They’re awesome!” (Note: Christi is referring to directors/writers/stars John Adams + Zelda Adams, not The Addams Family lol).” Unrated | Runtime 1h 32m
Where to Watch Mother of Flies (2026):
Isaiah Swanson’s Pick

Isaiah Swanson says: “It’s a zombie movie that has a bit more on its mind than flesh-eating fun, though there’s plenty of that to enjoy, too! Shinichiro Ueda’s scrappy indie flick captures your attention from the second it starts and never stops surprising you even through the final credits. One Cut of the Dead overflows with joy in the act of creation!” Not Rated | Runtime 1h 36m
Where to Watch One Cut of the Dead (2017):
AJ Spencer’s Pick

AJ Spencer says: “I’m gonna pick a weird one for February. Since it’s a month to celebrate love, I’m picking Bone Lake. It’s got strong performances and an extremely well-written story. Yes… it does feature graphic nudity, violence, and erotic themes. It’s a bit spicy, but it’s done right. I’d like to stress that the graphic nudity is only in the first five minutes and not anywhere else. I just know people like a head’s up on that kind of thing. You can fast-forward that part and still enjoy a suspenseful survival horror film about a couples’ getaway that becomes an absolute nightmare!” Rated R | Runtime 1h 34m
Where to Watch Bone Lake (2024):
Robert Tharp’s Pick

Robert Tharp says: “Who wouldn’t wish for a warm body – or Warm Bodies – on a cold February night? It’s Romeo and Juliet but she’s a cute alive girl and he’s a cute dead guy. It has the usual zombie horror stuff, but it’s also romantic for Valentine’s Day. And I like its sense of humor! Give it a chance. I think it’s really sweet. And funny!” Rated PG-13 | Runtime 1h 38m

Mom chose Nosferatu (1922) because “I was thinking really hard about what horror movie I should recommend for February and I looked up and saw a shadow on the wall that looked just like Nosferatu! And then I thought ‘That’s a GREAT classic horror movie that everyone should see at least once’ and so that’s why I chose it. It’s a very atmospheric spooky vampire movie and it doesn’t take too long or have a weird naked man run at you like the new one we watched a couple years ago. It’s classy. And I love how he looks – I have a Funko Pop of him! I was happy to see his shadow on the wall. Great vampire and great movie!” Not Rated | Runtime 1h 24m (Note: You can watch Nosferatu for free – sans music – on HorrorFam.com’s YouTube Channel!)

Adam Page’s Pick

Adam Page says: “In the Mouth of Madness really gets something a lot of horror movies don’t: the real terror isn’t a monster under the bed; it’s when you realize the bed wasn’t real to begin with. Sam Neill plays an insurance investigator who gradually discovers he’s a character in someone else’s story. It’s H.P Lovecraft but filtered through post-modern dread, and it asks ‘What if reality is just a consensus?’… And then that consensus is starts to change. That’s an idea that’s kept me up longer than any jump scare! Plus, it’s directed by John Carpenter.” Rated R | Runtime 1h 35m
