Lauren Spear’s Pick

January is my (and Isaiah Swanson’s!) birthday month, so I’m choosing a horror film that has a significant birthday this year… Night of the Creeps is turning 40 years old in 2026! If you’ve been putting off watching it for the past four decades, this is your sign to finally give it a chance. It’s written and directed by Fred Dekker (the writer/director of The Monster Squad) and stars Halloween III‘s Tom Atkins. It starts out in 1959 with aliens landing, causing a small outbreak that’s quickly contained, and then the film flashes forward to the “present day” (1986) where hijinks ensue and the alien slugs are released on the public again on a much larger scale. Basically, the slugs enter people’s brains and turn them into zombies. If you love horror films like Return of the Living Dead, The Monster Squad, or Night of the Comet, then Night of the Creeps is going to be a favorite. Speaking of favorites, JC Hooper is one of my all-time favorite horror movie characters. Here’s an out-of-context snippet of a JC quote that I’m feeling the vibe of going into the new year: “Everything IS a joke. It’s hilarious. Because if you take it seriously…you just get depressed all the time.” If that attitude and plenty of creative zombie antics sounds like a great time, watch Night of the Creeps! Rated R | Runtime 1h 30m

Frank Spear’s Pick

Frank Spear says: “The Black Phone is a horror/suspense period piece set in the 1970s that follows a boy coming face-to-face with a terrifying psycho (played by Ethan Hawke) after being abducted. It also has a really neat supernatural twist that I don’t want to spoil! It’s super suspenseful and, at times, terrifying. If you’re sensitive to blood or gore, this is an excellent choice because it’s executed perfectly while keeping that stuff to a minimum. It also has one of the tightest scripts I’ve seen in years. While I didn’t like Black Phone 2, there’s no question that the first Black Phone is one of the best horror movies made in the 2020s.” Rated R | Runtime 1h 43m

Mom chose World War Z because “It’s just GOOD. Most of what I loved, I can’t talk about because it’d be spoilers… But I really liked all the action with the zombies – especially the part where they climb up the wall! I don’t think that’s a spoiler. And I loved seeing all the different locations – there’s so much beautiful scenery! – and how each place they went to in the World was handling the zombies. They did a really good job making it feel like it was a world-wide zombie outbreak instead of just one spot. And I liked Brad Pitt as the hero and how he handled the situation…but I can’t say what he did because that would be a spoiler. So, people should watch it to see what he does!” Rated PG-13 | Runtime 1h 56m

Adam Page’s Pick

Adam Page says: “Lucio Fulci’s The Beyond doesn’t play by the rules, and that’s exactly why it works. The plot, vaguely, is about a hotel that’s over one of the gates of Hell, but it doesn’t matter really. This isn’t a tidy, three-act nightmare, with neat explanations tied up in a bow. This is a fever dream disguised as a horror movie. Logic dissolves like flesh in acid. And there’s plenty of that, here.
What makes The Beyond so scary isn’t the gore. Although Fulci serves it up with all the enthusiasm of an Italian street vendor. It’s the atmosphere of coming doom, the feeling that the characters wandered into something old and hungry that doesn’t care about their survival. The hotel is a wound in reality, bleeding out across the dimensions.
The Beyond‘s cinematography, with long, hypnotic zooms into eyes and paintings, drags you into a trance. You aren’t watching it, you’re infected by it. And the ending? Total nihilism, served ice cold. There’s no redemption or escape. You realize that some doors, once opened, can never be closed. It will keep you up at night.” Rated R | Runtime 1h 20m
