Lauren Spear’s Pick

A zombie apocalypse could occur at ANY time… but what if it hit during the holiday season? And what if you were also living inside a musical? If you want the answers to those questions, you want to stream Anna and the Apocalypse! I’ve already gushed about this film on my list of the Best Horror Musicals and in my ramble about Memorable Improvised Weapons. I think it’s great! I also love the music. I bought the MP3 of “Turning My Life Around” immediately after I watched the movie for the first time (so I could own the tune, in case music streaming went down), and that song has made it into my Spotify Wrapped top five for the past few years. Anna and the Apocalypse is a great zombie movie, a great horror movie, a great musical, and every frame is dripping with Christmas decor. The holiday sweaters, the bedecked trees, the snowmen, the twinkling lights… Come together with friends, family, and strangers; sing a few songs; and survive the apocalypse! Rated R | Runtime 1h 33m

Frank Spear’s Pick

Frank Spear says: “I’ve spent the last few months watching every horror movie from 2005 and Santa’s Slay was one of the best! AND it’s a Christmas horror movie! It’s, uh, pretty inappropriate. Even in 2005, many of the jokes would’ve been considered inappropriate, and those moments stand out even more now. I wouldn’t put Santa’s Slay on for a Family Movie Night. But if you’re chillin’ by yourself or with some buddies who just wanna see Bill Goldberg – the wrestler! – perform some hilarious, creative, holiday-themed kills as Santa Claus? It’s a great time! The humor will be hit or miss or a little of both (that feeling you get when you laugh at a joke and then immediately think ‘I should not have laughed at that’), but the horror-action scenes – especially the kills – still hold up and are a lot of fun.” Rated R | Runtime 1h 18m
Where to Watch Santa’s Slay (2005):
Christi Bandy’s Pick

Christi Bandy says: “I’m choosing Silent Night, Deadly Night! Obviously. It’s a CLASSIC!! As you can probably guess, I’m not happy about the remake.” Rated R | Runtime 1h 19m

Isaiah Swanson’s Pick

Isaiah Swanson says: “This Greg Nicotero-directed holiday special of the legendary horror franchise is a nice addition to your holiday horror list! A man stops by for a session of Shapeshifters Anonymous while being pursued by a group of Santa Clauses. Awesome practical effects and creature design including one of the most badass Santas ever!” Rated TV-MA | Runtime 46m

AJ Spencer’s Pick

AJ Spencer says: “I’m going to go with 2015’s Krampus because it’s so much fun! I think people should watch it because it’s a perfect mixture of dark humor and folk horror.” Rated PG-13 | Runtime 1h 38m

Robert Tharp’s Pick

Robert Tharp says: “Lauren recommended Rare Exports to me back when it came out, but I didn’t have streaming back then. Now, I do! And she was right – it’s really good. It’s from Finland/Norway/Sweden and their accents are very thick but I think they realized that because the movie has subtitles, even when they’re speaking English. I was very grateful! It’s a movie that makes you feel cold, just watching it. The snowy weather doesn’t look fun, it looks like it hurts to be in. I thought that added to the horror though. And the story is neat! There’s a team drilling into the icy mountain and they unearth Santa Claus. But the only one who knows what’s up is Pietari, a kid who lives in the area. And this isn’t our American ‘holly jolly’ Santa Claus! He’s a SCARY Santa Claus!! And, here in the USA, kids in horror movies almost always make it to the end credits but filmmakers in other parts of the world don’t play by our rules… so I was very worried for little Pietari! That was FUN! It’s nice when a horror movie has characters you care about and you fear for their lives because the bad guy is actually scary. Plus, Rare Exports surprised me more than once. That’s fun too!” Rated R | Runtime 1h 24m

Note: Lauren’s mom doesn’t write articles for HorrorFam.com, but she’s an important cheerleader behind-the-scenes and wanted to contribute to this page!

Mom chose Gremlins as her December 2025 horror streaming pick because “it takes place at Christmastime” and because she “loves the creature effects – the bad gremlins look so mischievous and evil and Gizmo is very cute!” She also thought Gremlins would be a great watch for “almost” all ages (no viewers under five, please!) and, therefore, is “a horror movie everyone can enjoy without getting too scared!” Rated PG | Runtime 1h 46m
Where to Watch Gremlins (1984):
Adam Page’s Pick

Adam Page says: “The Terminator is a horror movie. On this hill, I will die. It’s not just sci-fi, it’s a nightmare dressed in chrome. Forget the lasers and the time travel for a second. Strip it all away and we are left with pure and distilled dread. The sort that sits in your stomach at 3am like bad street food.
This thing, this machine, it doesn’t eat, it doesn’t sleep, has no feelings. It just keeps coming. No reasoning with it, no bribing. You can’t have a drink and swap stories with it trying to find a common ground over your childhoods. It doesn’t have one. It has a mission, and you’re the main course.
Director James Cameron understood the primal fear here. The terror of being hunted by something that’s better than you could ever be. It looks human enough to get close, but has nothing that makes us vulnerable. It makes us hesitate and makes us who we are.
Sarah Connor running through those dark alleys? That isn’t a hero’s journey. That’s the prey realizing the food chain is now rewritten, and she’s much lower than she thought. The chrome skeleton rising from the flames? The monster under your bed is getting up to say hello.” Rated R | Runtime 1h 47m
