Lauren Spear’s Pick

drag me to hell streaming now

For me, and perhaps for you, November marks the yearly onset of seasonal Depression. Doesn’t matter how great things might be going in life – it relentlessly arrives like clockwork just the same. It can feel like a curse! Which is why, in addition to vitamin D supplements (very helpful) and routine walks, I like to “keep things in perspective” by watching films like Drag Me to Hell! This Sam Raimi film shares a lot in common with his Evil Dead films in that it’s very dark but also very funny at times. It also shares a lot of DNA with 1957’s Curse of the Demon as well! It’s about a bright-futured young woman who works as a loan officer at a bank, makes a selfish decision to advance her own career by denying an old woman (in incomparable and unforgettable Mrs. Ganush!) a loan, and is then curse by said old woman to “go to hell” after three days. Christine tries everything to stop the curse before her time is up – which leads to some truly awful bad days – but can she save herself? Drag Me to Hell will hopefully give you a chuckle and make you think “well, I’m sad for ‘no reason’ right now, but at least I’m not going through all THAT!” Rated PG-13 | Runtime 1h 39m

the invisible man returns streaming now

Frank Spear says: “It stars Vincent Price! ‘NUFF SAID! Kidding. Kidding. That’s a big part of why I love The Invisible Man Returns (it’s one of my favorite movies!), but I also really enjoy the pacing. It’s a lot like The Invisible Man (1933), which I also love, but it’s faster-paced and there’s a bit more meat to it plot-wise. Vincent Price is falsely accused of murder and he teams up with the brother of the original Invisible Man to get injected with the serum so he can lay low until his name is cleared, but – if you remember the original – the serum slowly drives its users insane, so it’s a race against time! You care about Vincent Price’s version of the character a bit more because he has more at stake. And the old effects are still pretty neat to look at!” Unrated | Runtime 1h 21m

Isaiah Swanson’s Pick

Isaiah Swanson says: “The Night of the Hunter (1955) 70 this year and remains one of the best movies ever!” Unrated | Runtime 1h 33m

AJ Spencer’s Pick

Eli Roth Thanksgiving 2023 streaming

AJ Spencer says: “I feel like it’s perfect for the holiday season mood!” Taken from one of the then-fictious trailers in Grindhouse (2007), Thanksgiving (2023) is an Eli Roth slasher about a Massachusetts town being terrorized by a killer in a John Carver/pilgrim mask the week of Thanksgiving. Rated R | Runtime 1h 46m

Where to Watch Thanksgiving (2023):

Robert Tharp’s Pick

30 Days of Night streaming

Robert Tharp says: “I thought of 30 Days of Night because our days are getting shorter and shorter. It’s getting dark at 4:00pm now! But at least we aren’t where they are… The characters are in the northernmost point of Alaska and they have a full month of night, which makes it the perfect setting for vampires to invade and take over. The movie’s a little stupid sometimes, but that’s a big part of why I like it so much. Lots of action. Good effects. Very entertaining. One of the most fun horror movies that take place in the snow!” Rated R | Runtime 1h 53m

warlock 1989 horror movie released january 11

For November, the month of feasting, Mom chose Warlock as her horror streaming pick – a film where male witch Julian Sands has a penchant for eating children! She especially loves the time-travel aspect. Warlock starts in 1691 Boston with witch-hunter Richard E. Grant finally capturing warlock Julian Sands, but Satan steps in for his homeboy and propels the warlock into the “future” world of 1989 Los Angeles (a time and place where his wicked ways can easily run rampant to their fullest capacity!). Richard E. Grant also hops through Satan’s time portal and teams up with a “modern” gal to track down his witchy prey. It’s a lot of fun and Mom says the conclusion of Warlock is very clever and satisfying. Rated R | Runtime 1h 43m

Where to Watch Warlock (1989):

Adam Page’s Pick

Hellraiser 1987 streaming now

Adam Page says: “Hellraiser (1987) scares on a very visceral level because it changes pleasure and pain into something grotesque and indistinguishable. It doesn’t use jump scares like other slasher movies, but Clive Barker’s premise is creepy enough: the Cenobites aren’t mindless killers, but rather explorers of sensation who have risen above the human understanding of pain and ecstasy. The practical, tangible special effects give Hellraiser extra power. Frank’s resurrection through the floorboards is sickly, slimy body horror at its finest, and makes death feel reversible and the flesh terrifyingly workable. The puzzle box remains a symbol of forbidden curiosity with irreversible consequences, digging at our fear of unleashing something we can’t control.

What’s most disturbing is the human evil. The cold betrayals and manipulations of Julia feel more horrific than any leather-clad demon. The Cenobites, especially the now-legendary Pinhead with his calm, sophisticated menace show us something worse than death. They are bringing eternal, incomprehensible torture. Hellraiser doesn’t just scare you, it makes you question desire itself. It suggests that our deepest cravings may just lead to somewhere utterly inhuman. ” Rated R | Runtime 1h 34m
