Lauren Spear’s Pick

It’s “Back to School” season! That means it’s time to recommend one of my absolute favorite horror films: The Faculty (1998). Written by Kevin Williamson (Scream) and directed by Robert Rodriguez (From Dusk Till Dawn), The Faculty is a sci-fi horror movie that’s a little bit Invasion of the Body Snatchers, a healthy helping of The Thing, and just a dash of She’s All That. It’s SO much fun! It’s quick-witted, it has great moments of suspense, it has awesome special effects, and I love the characters. I first watched The Faculty when I was 13 and found it just scary enough to be EXCITING (what’s going to happen next?! will everyone be okay?!?) without triggering nightmares.
The Faculty also has an incredible all-star cast including Elijah Wood (Maniac), Josh Hartnett (Trap), Jordana Brewster (Heart Eyes), Clea Duvall (American Horror Story: Asylum), Famke Janssen (Lord of Illusions), Piper Laurie (Twin Peaks), and Robert Patrick (Terminator 2). It’s about a parasitic alien invasion and Ohio’s Herrington High School is Ground Zero. First, the teachers are taken over… can the students survive? Watch it to find out! Rated R | Runtime 1h 44m

Frank Spear’s Pick

Predator 2 (1990) takes place a decade after the events of Predator (1987) – in the futuristic year of 1997! The streets of Los Angeles are more dangerous than ever before as a grueling heat wave engulfs the city and warring cartels have firefights in the streets. Danny Glover is the wild card LAPD Lieutenant who goes against orders to throw himself into the thick of the action. He’s a warrior! And the perfect opponent/trophy for the Predator alien who just flew in for a Hunt. Frank Spear said that he likes Predator 2 even more than the original due to its faster pace, urban setting – “I love seeing the Predator stalk his prey in the city instead of the jungle!”, its slight goofiness, and being able to see far more of the title character. Rated R | Runtime 1h 48m
Where to Watch Predator 2 (1990):
Christi Bandy’s Pick

Christi Bandy says, “Silence of the Lambs is a flawless film that is the only horror movie in history to win Best Picture at the Oscars! Great performances and an unforgettable killer make this one of my favorite films of all time. Also, if you go in the basement of The Hollywood Museum, it houses the actual corridor and Hannibal’s cell from the film. Very spooky!” Rated R | Runtime 1h 58m
Where to Watch The Silence of the Lambs (1991):
Isaiah Swanson’s Pick

Isaiah Swanson says, “Described on Troma’s website as ‘The heartbreaking story of a living placenta that is raised as a human, a Christian, a soldier.’ Need I say more? This placenta’s mother is a competitive bodybuilder and does her best to raise her child, but life isn’t easy for the poor blob. He gets relentlessly bullied at school and wrestles with existential questions that only a placenta can truly understand. He experiences loss, betrayal, devastation, and embryonic pain! This movie forces you to face life’s harshest truths and the ultimate futility of existence! So, grab your bowl of spaghetti and pop in THE THINGY and have a great night pondering your life choices. And have a happy ‘Labor’ Day!” Unrated | Runtime 1h 31m
Where to Watch The Thingy: Confessions of a Teenage Placenta AKA The Miracle of Life (2013):
AJ Spencer’s Pick

AJ Spencer says, “The Bay isn’t your run of the mill low-budget found footage movie. The scares feel very real and will make you scared of the water the same way Jaws did!” Rated R | Runtime 1h 24m
Where to Watch The Bay (2012):
Robert Tharp’s Pick

Robert Tharp says, “Captain Kronos – Vampire Hunter was originally supposed to be a series of swashbuckling horror films, but they only made this one. Too bad! I wish they’d made more. I really like Captain Kronos. It has action, it has spooky vampires, it has Caroline Munro… It feels like the old Hammer Horror films! If you like those, you’ll love this!” Rated R | Runtime 1h 31m
Where to Watch Captain Kronos – Vampire Hunter (1974):
Cathy Tharp’s Pick
Note: Lauren’s mom doesn’t write articles for HorrorFam.com, but she’s an important cheerleader behind-the-scenes and wanted to contribute to this page!

Mom says she loves Signs because the “aliens lurking outside were REALLY creepy!” and because of the undercurrent of Christian faith and the messaging that “everything happens for a reason” and “what the characters thought were their greatest weaknesses is what saves them.” As for the plot: After an enormous crop circle appears in a family’s cornfield, they need to work together to figure out what did it – and how to survive it. If you loved A Quiet Place (another one of Mom’s faves), take a trip back to 2002 and watch Signs – you’ll dig it! Rated PG-13 | Runtime 1h 46m
Where to Watch Signs (2002):
Adam Page’s Pick

Adam Page said, “With the release of Alien: Earth on Disney+ I’m going all the way back to where it all began: Ridley Scott’s Alien. A mysterious signal causes a group of space truckers to set down on an unexplored planet. John Hurt’s Kane investigates some leathery eggs and a long-legged, acid-blooded parasite attaches itself to his face. Writer Dan O’Bannon plays on the male fear of childbirth as the thing rips itself free from Kane’s chest and proceeds to devour the crew.
If it’s watched as a standalone horror movie, the alien becomes a Lovecraftian nightmare. One of the Elder Gods arrived to drive us insane and consume us. There’s not a whole lot of gore on show here (chestbursting aside) so it makes Alien a good starter horror movie for younger [12+] viewers. The sense of dread and claustrophobia present here has never been replicated in any of the sequels. Here is where artist H.R Giger’s hellish imaginings first took cinematic form.” Rated R | Runtime 1h 57m
Where to Watch Alien (1979):
Heather Landry/SandpaperDaisy’s Pick

One of Heather Landry’s Top 3 favorite movies, The Wicker Man (1973) has inspired much of her artwork. The Wicker Man follows Howie, a devout Christian police officer who’s investigating the disappearance of a young girl. Through an anonymous tip, he’s managed to track her down to a remote island where the inhabitants are worshipping Celtic gods and engaging in pagan ritual practices. Howie’s appalled but he’s on the case! Will he find the missing girl? What ELSE will he find out in the process? Heather loves how unsettling The Wicker Man is, how artistic it is, and how Christopher Lee – one of her Top 2 Monster Man crushes – has an unforgettable role as Lord Summerisle. Rated R | Runtime 1h 33m
